They shout and scream slogans and pull all the right strings to win hearts (read votes) of their electorate, but when it comes to raising the problems of their constituencies in parliament, these political honchos look like laggards. Records show that most high-profile politicians failed to ask questions in parliament and rarely took part in debates over government policies.
The worst performer was Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, who did not ask a single question and took part in only three debates. Similar was the performance of Atal Bihari Vajpayee who took part in only seven debates and did not raise a single issue about his constituency. Due to severe health problems, the former prime minister came to parliament only for 19 days in his five-year term. The performance of another BJP top boss, LK Advani, was also dismal. He didn't ask any question and participated in 55 debates.Mamata Banerjee was too busy fighting CPI(M) in Bengal to attend parliament and was present on only 59 days in five years. JD(S) top boss HD Deve Gowda was also too busy with state politics and solving family disputes. Hence, he came to parliament on 125 days. He did not have time to ask any question and was present for only six debates.
